Creative project

For my creative project I decided to do an action film, the genre of my project will be reflected by the use of mise-en-scene, and the use of quick cuts and short scenes, which creates a fast paced film. I decided to do a short film because there is enough detail included in my project to make sense from start to finish, it will make sense to my audience, and will understand the message and the story line. My target audience is British teenagers because it reflects the youth of London and other countries wouldn't understand the vocabulary that will be used in the short film. I will focus on Mise-en-scene in my project, including location, as it will reflect the genre and story, an empty car park, and I will focus on editing to create a fast paced film and we will create quick cuts.
The location of our filming will be in Purley Car Park for the "drug deal" and for the chase and 'accident' the location is to be confirmed but will probably use the road I live on in Kenley.

Our ideas were first influenced by Fast and Furios, because of the action scenes and the car chase and then we went off that topic and did few changes

The film I chose for my coursework is called "Idiocracy" the film was realeased in 2006, directed by Mike Judge, the film is a sci-fi, adventure and comedy. I mainly class the film as comedy because it has good jokes throughout the whole film. The film is about Joe Bauers (Luke Wilson) and Rita (Maya Rudolph) who were taking part in an army experiment, which was a top secret hibarnation program carried out by the pentagon, but things went wrong with the hibernation as the Pentagon forgot about the participants which ended up with Joe and Rita waking up 500 years in the future, where the intelligence level of society was dramatically decreased which made Rita and Joe the most intelligent people alive on Earth.

The extract I chose to analyze consists both comedy and adventure. First thing I'm going to analyze is Mise-en-scene, I chose this to work because the extract shows how much the world have changed in in 500 years, the fact that Joe is supposed to be in a "Hospital" is already shocking because we are shown a room that isn't really sterile and doesn't look like a hospital room. Also when the "Doctor" walks in, the audience are shown a man who doesn't seem to know what he's talking about and shows that he isn't a trained professional, we are also shown a prop used with the doctor that develops him, which was a cigar, this prop is really effective because it shows how much things have changed in 500 years, that doctors are walking around smoking while treating patients, this makes the audience shocked about what they see, it's not something we would expect a doctor to do as it's really not professional and could be also dangerous, and further more in today's world people aren't even allowed to smoke inside and the fact that the doctor himself is smoking inside the hospital shows that the law has also changed, in a bad way, people can do pretty much whatever they like, wether it's dangerous or bad. When I was shown the doctor smoking while treating Joe with his problems, I personally felt a bit shocked and confused, I didn't know what to think or how to respond to that, on the other hand I found it amusing that he just walked in smoking not giving a damn about anything, this shows that how laid back society got in the future. 
Costume, hair and make-up is used effectively in the extract to develop the idea of society being unintelligent this is shown through the way the doctor is dressed because the audience would expect a doctor to be wearing white and clean clothes, instead we see a doctor wearing baggy clothes, with a red hairband, which suggests that he's wearing his own clothes to work showing that they don't care about hygiene. We don't see much of the doctor's hair but as much as we can see, it's not really looked after, it's just grown down and long and looks greasy, which also shows that he doesn't care about himself. On the other hand we are shown Joe in contrast of the doctor as Joe's clothes are his normal clothes he was given by the Pentagon, nothin fancy just a green top and a white tshirt. Joe's hair is also looked after, it's short and avarage, also nothing fancy. This contrast between Joe and the doctor makes the audience see how much things have changed.

The setting of the extratct is also really effective because when Joe comes to the realization that something is not right, he walked to the window and when he opened the blinds, the state of the world was revealed to the audience and Joe himself. We were shown a world where everything is destroyed and polluted, we were shown a bridge which cars kept driving off and crashing into each other as the bridge was broken in half. We are shown a lot of rubbish just laying around on the floor which shows that the government does no longer care about the state of the world, when we look at world we are shown, we can't see any trees or plants, just rubbish. We can also see buildings crashed and in really bad state. I found that a little bit humoreous, the setting perfectly managed to reflect what year the film was played in. The fact that everything was destroyed it created fear about destopian future, because they realize that things could actually end up like that.

The extract also has really effective performance, Joe effectively achieves to make the audience believe that he's confused, he achieved this by his confused facial expression when the doctor walked in. The way Joe was walking up and down when he was trying to explain what happened to him, created an atmosphere of fear and worry. The way Joe is worried, it makes the audience feel the same way as Joe, this makes the audience feel more involved in the whole film. Joe's mood changes a lot throughout the whole extract, because first when the doctor walked he was confused, then from confused he went to stressed because the doctor wasn't listening to him, and then we were shown that fear, when Joe realized that he's 500 years in the future, he was really shocked, ha achieved to show this fear by standing up and looking around and then finally went to the window and opened blinds to see if it's true. Throughout the extract we are shown Joe through a medium shot when he's sitting down talking to the doctor, this brings the audience's attention mainly on Joe and his body language and facial expression.

Dex Shepard the doctor is really effective in terms of performance because he manages to reflect the stupidity of the society and the audience can see the way people think about certain issues in the future. He achieves by the use of speech, he talks really uneducated, he said "This is that faggot talk we were talking bout" when Joe was explaining what happened to him. This reflects the fact that talking "posh" is not acceptable because it's "faggot talk". Dex Shepard is also reflected as an uneducated, non professional doctor in the film because he doesn't use terms we would expect a doctor to use, he just talks like an everyday low class person, and a doctor is one of the more educated people so it shows that other people are even less educated. 

The use of miss-en-scene is used really well in the extract, it perfectly reflects the way the future could be, they used it really well to show how intelligence levels decreased in the future. By the use of mise-en-scene they achieved to show that if we don't take care of our planet and don't change the way we live, things could get really bad, exactly like it was shown in the film. They used a film as "wake up call" to make people realize that we aren't living in a way we should be.

The film is a comedy, it achieves to make audience laugh but it also makes the audience think about the future 

For the extract I'll analyze mise-en-scene because they changed a lot of things about the "world" to make fit into the 2500 brief. 

I will also analyze performance because the actors are acting like they have really IQ levels and really unintelligent.

In Bruges

The use of Mise-en-scene is used through the whole film to develop the characters of Ray, Ken and Harry, acting performance of the three characters also develops them in the film.

Ray is developed through mise-en-scene in the film by location, costume and acting performance. Location is used to develop Ray as when they arrive to Bruges, he keeps telling Ken that this place is a "shithole" and keep saying that he does not want to be there, this tells us that Ray is not the type of person who goes to cities like Burges, he would rather be at places with more life and fun. When Ray and Ken first arrive to the Hotel they will stay at Ray makes it really obvious that he doesn't want to be there when he says "For two weeks? In fucking Bruges? In a room like this? With you? No way." This shows that he's not Bruges by his own choice, he's there because he has no choice. His costume develops his character because the grey suit he's wearing is telling us that he's a hitman. Throughout the film we are also shown that he's an aggresive person with a short temper as he can get really angry for the smallest thing, we are also shown that he's really impatient as he always wants to do everything immediately and can't wait. We also find out that Ray is a reckless character because he doesn't think about the consequences of his actions which ended up with a tragedy of him killing a young boy, but from that we find out that Ray does have a guility-consceous because he always looks upset and looks like he's thinking about the young boy he killed which really bothers him. There was a prop used to develop Ray which was a gun, Ray was holding a gun against his head in a playground thinking about killing himself which shows that he think it would be easier to run away from all the problems he's having, this shows that he has a heart and does really think he shouldn't be alive.
Colin Farrell develops Ray as a charcter by fast action, throughout the whole film he moves really quick, he also doesn't smile a lot which suggests that he's not happy.

Ken who is the partner of Ray, the other hitman is developed in the film by using mise-en-scene, costume and acting performance. In the film he's wearing a brown suit with a white shirt and tie which suggests that he's a more experienced hitman and it gives us the impression of a gangster. Location is used in the film to develop Ken as he refers to Bruges as a "Fairy Tale Town" which shows that he enjoys being in that city, throughout the whole film he's talking about how wonderful Burges is and even mentions that he wouldn't mind living there. He also knows alot about the city, knows when the buildings were built, or when they were in the church he knew the history of it which shows that Ken is a really educated and smart man.
Brendan Gleeson develops Ken as a character really good in the film because he always acts slow which shows that Ken is a lazy person.

Harry is the third main character in the film, we are not shown who Harry is until the middle of the film, we only hear his voice through the phone when he's speaking Ken which makes him seem more mysterious and more scary. Harry is shown as a rich man in the film because the first time we see him, he's in his big house with his family. The fact that he has a family develops him as a family man who isn't as scary as we first thought. We are also shown that he loves the City Bruges because he always refers to it as a "Fucking fairy tale town". Harry is shown as a really aggressive and angry man in the film this is shown by his speech because he's always swearing and doesn't accept mistakes. Although we are shown that Harry isn't as cruel because when he first shot Ken in the leg he helped him up after and walked him down the stairs. Harry wants to killo Ray for killing that little boy because he said "You can't kill a kid and get away with it" but when he kills the dwarf he then decides to kill himslef because he thought the dwarf was a little boy, this shows that Harry wouldn't go against his own rules. Harry is dressed really smart in the film, wearing a nice expensive suit which shows that he's a more experienced and better hitman than Ken and Ray, makes the audience think that Harry is the boss of Ken and Ray.

Star Wars: New Hope

The extract I chose was from Star Wars IV A New Hope, in this extract mise-en-scene is used throughout the whole extract by costume, location and performance style.
Location is used in the extract because they’re trapped in the Trash Compactor, which is a really small and disgusting which makes the audience feel sorry for the characters. When the trash compactor starts moving, it creates fear for the audience because they feel like that the characters are in a really dangerous situation and they might die.
Costume is used very well in this extract because both Hansolo and Luke are wearing the storm troopers outfit which makes them look like they’re part of the dark side, also costume is used really well on Chewbacca because his costume looks realistic. 

Luke is developed in this extract through costume and mise-en-scene because his costume makes him seem like someone who knows what his doing and also makes him seem like a brave person, mise-en-scene develops him because it was his idea to jump down to the trash compactor which also makes him seem like a brave person and someone who knows what to do. 

Hansolo is developed in this extract by mise-en-scene and acting performance, mise-scene develops him because he's aware that the place they're trapped in is really dangerous and he knows it's not a safe place for them to be at. Although he acts like he's not scared at all and thinks he will save everyone else. 

Star Wars

The film I have used was Star Wars VI Return of The Jedi, the extract I used was when Luke Skywalker is fighting Darth Vader. The camera is used at the beginning of the extract using a medium close up showing both Luke and Vader and then the camera suddenly focuses on the lightsaber using a extreme close up making the audience aware that it's a really important prop in that scene. They used pans shot when the camera was following the lightsaber flying in the Luke's hand. The way they used the camera makes the audience prepared for a fight that will happen between Vader and Luke so it creates tension. They also used a long shot, using a high angle shot while Vader and Luke were in the fight, the way they used the camera makes the audience see the whole fight and shows the location of the fight. In that scene they a crane shot which makes the audience feel like they are in power during the film as they’re above the two characters.

The second film I chose was Star Wars III The Revenge of The Sith, this extract is a fight between Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. The scene in this extract is a close up of Anakin showing the anger and the hatred on his face towards Obi-Wan, they used a low angle shot because Obi-Wan is on the floow which makes the audience feel like they’re Obi-Wan and creates a feeling of fear about getting defeated by Anakin. They used a tilt shot when they were showing Anakin because Obi-Wan was getting closer and closer to the ground so the camera moved up looking further up towards Anakin’s face, so it’s sort of like a first person view shot, which makes the audience feel more involved in the film.

Hart's War

The film "Hart's War" uses location, setting, props, costume, make-up and hair to show different personalities throughout the film in many ways. The film is based on Collin Farrell (Lieutenant) who has been imprisoned in Germany in a camp with other American soldiers.

The first scene with Colin Farrell looks smart and well educated which is foreshadowing the fact that he was studying Law at Yale University and later on in the film we can see him using his knowledge when he's fighting Terrence Howard's case in the court room. 

The first key scene I chose was when Bruce Willis is talking to Colonel Werner Visser when they are talking and drinking together and Bruce Willis saw the Werner's gun taken apart on the table and puts all together and aims it at the Colonel, he did this to show he is not scared of him. The location of the scene is in the Colonel's room they're in, looks really calm and cosy showing that the Germans are in charge there because they are more privileged than American's. Colonel Werner looks smarter and more sophisticated and his uniform shows that the German leader has done something good for his country because he has medals and a rank, expressing the fact that even though he's and evil and nasty person he done something heroic for his country. 

Colonel Werner Visser's make up is much brighter than Bruce Willis' which expresses the fact that he is Charge in that room, his uniform is much cleaner and smarted than Bruce Willis', although the make up on the German is pale and dark around the eyes giving the audience the impression that he is an evil person. 

When Colonel Werner Visser puts on his vinyl, he says its "black jazz" music, giving us the idea that Werner has nothing against black people.

Colonel Werner Visser's room is much cleaner and organised than the American Soldier's showing that he is more important at the camp and that he's in charge leading the whole camp.

The second location is when Bruce Willis sends Colin Farrell to another barrack because he said there's not enough space in the Officer's barrack. The place they sent him is dirty and packed with many people and all they have there for him is a bunk bed in middle. 

 

The use of a Prop in Harry Potter

The use of the prop in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is the sword, the sward is made significant in the extract by it's use, the way Harry uses the sword the defeat the Basilisk. It's also made look significant because the sword just suddenly appears in the bag that Dumbledore gave Harry, the sword was given to Harry  by Dumbledore to help him out in trouble. The fact that the sword was given by Dumbledore makes it look like a really important object in the film because Dumbledore has a good reason for everything he does. The narrative in the extract also makes it look significant because the way Harry was talking about the sword and how Tom Riddle reacts when the sword appears, they both know that specific object will help Harry defeat the Basilisk.

It's made look significant in framing because when the sward appears in the bag, the camera focuses on the bag and sword and it just suddenly appears, and while the sword is appearing the camera is aggressively focusing on to the sword, it makes the audience think it's an important object because it's at the centre of attention.

The sword is also made look significant in the scene because that's the object that saved Harry's life and helped Harry defeat the Basilisk, so the audience thinks that the object was the reason Harry survived in the scene, also when Harry kills the Basilisk with the help of the sword the camera is focused on the sword as it stabs the Basilisk in the head.

Horror film, the planing of the film and describing the scene and theme. 

Mise-En-Scene

Mise-En-Scene is used in the theatre and film worlds to describe the design aspects of a production, it's the arrangement of scene and it explains the properties to represent the place where the play or scene was filmed or played. The term is borrowed from a French theatrical expression, meaning roughly “put into the scene”.  In other words, mise-en-scène describes the stuff in the frame and the way it is shown and arranged. 
My extract is "The Suicide Bomber" from the film "The Hurt Locker" 

In the extract I've picked Mise-En-Scene was used really well because the film is about the war in Iraq but it was filmed in Jordan and they managed to turn Jordan into Iraq just by making the buildings and the sourounding look like it's actually Iraq.

They also used really good costumes in it because the soldiers in the film look exactly like American soldiers which makes the whole film really realistic and believable, the citizens in the film look like the citizens of Iraq by the way they dress and look like. 

Make-up was used really well in the extract because they managed to get some scars on the soldiers and also on the suicide bomber, and it made the whole scene realistic. 

The way they used the camera how they focused in and out on the suicide bomber and when the soldier said they can't help him the camera suddenly got away from the bomber just like the soldiers so it made the audience feel like they're part of the scene. 

Sound Of Cinema

The sounds in films are really important because they are  giving the audience an idea of image about the structure of the film and gives them a sound experience, it also gives them a visual effect which makes the audience feel like the film is more fluid. 

George Lucas for Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977 used continues music in the film which forms and shapes the vision for the audience and it makes the film more continual and gives it a continues flow. Just like George Lucas used symphonic and romantic music in some themes to give the audience a better idea about what's going on.

 

The music in the film makes the audience feel like they are in a boat on a river and the river is the music and it takes the listener on a trip to the world of the film. 

Music and sounds in films form the visual effect and makes it more affective. 

Making of our 5 shot short film, Christoph & Rahim

In our group we had to make a short film about "Saving the World in 5 Minutes" this was our very first project.
During the recording of our short film we learned how to use the camera, planning the scenarios, and performing the character which we had to play for.
Our film was about the Earth's crust crumbling and there is not much time lift until the apocalypse and the end of the world. In the film we used a lot of improvising which I personally think was great because we could bring more of our performing skills into the filming.

We made some mistakes in the film but that was because that was our first time trying to make a film, we learned a lot about making of films today and I think we got used to using the camera correctly which means we learned to start and pause the recording the film at the right time.

We could improve the film by having more time to shoot the sequences and having more time to rehears the shots and getting used to where the camera is facing so we are not in the shot when we aren't supposed to, apart from that I think we've done pretty well for ourselves.

My favourite film

My favourite film is The Conjuring which is a horror film made in 2013.

The film is about a family who moves into their new home and they start experiencing paranormal activities, the family first doesn't really notice much of the activities but as days go by things are getting worse and worse. The family first started hearing noises and could smell a weird smell sometimes around the house. Later bruises start appearing on the mother  called Carolyn.
As the days went by things were getting really serious and freaky in the house, pictures and paintings were falling off the walls, the little girls in the family were experiencing "something" in their rooms, one of the girls could see something and was attacked by that demonic spirit.
Carolyn and Roger Perron got really freaked out by the things they went through therefor Carolyn went to find Ed and Lorraine Warren who were paranormal investigators. The film has a really good story line with full of "jumpy" parts in the film.
The film was really well directed by James Wan.
